Which Burger Machine Should I Choose?
If you're producing burgers by hand, you’ll know just how much effort it takes. Hand pressing gives you great control and that authentic texture but once your volumes increase, it can quickly become unsustainable.
So when is the right time to invest in a burger machine? And which one should you choose?
Let’s break it down.

Manual vs Machine: What’s the Trade-Off?
Many butchers start with a manual burger press. It’s simple, cost-effective, and delivers a handcrafted product. But if you're producing more than a few hundred burgers a day, switching to a machine could save hours of labour and keep your team fresh for other jobs.
One thing to keep in mind: switching to a machine may mean slightly tweaking your burger mix or recipe. Texture and consistency can change a little, especially compared to hand pressing.
The UK's Most Popular Burger Machine:
Formatic R2200
This is the go-to choice for most butchers, and with good reason.
Up to 2,000 burgers per hour
Automatic burger paper attachment
Built-in conveyor belt
It’s reliable, simple to operate, and widely supported with parts and servicing options across the UK.
Want a More Handmade Feel?
Try the Gesame MH100
If you're looking for something closer to the texture and appearance of a manual press, the Gesame MH100 could be the right fit.
- The mix is gently pressed into a drum and formed, creating a softer, less compressed burger
- Quieter and slower, but produces a premium, handmade-style product
- Also compatible with meatball drums
This model is a little more expensive, but it’s often the choice for butchers who pride themselves on that ‘butcher-made’ look and feel.

What About Meatballs?
Both the Formatic and Gesame machines can produce meatballs using the correct drum attachment. Keep in mind that they will come out in a puck shape (think ice hockey puck). To get a rounded meatball shape, you’ll either need to shape them by hand or invest in a meatball rounder, sold separately.
Any Other Options?
The ABM1000 is another solid contender. Not as widely known, but well-made and reliable. If you’re interested in exploring this model, we’re happy to talk you through how it compares to the Formatic and Gesame.
